In reply to in u'r experience what drug for GAD, posted by tammy on March 27, 2003, at 22:32:53
A few drugs I've taken have been helpful with GAD. Prozac helped, but very little. Although, it seemed to provide its best effects at a lower dose, i.e. 20mg. This was kind of nice, as there were no side effects at this level (YMMV).
I'll probably be lynched for this, lol, but Buspar worked surprisingly well for GAD also, but not any better than Prozac. I had to get up to 60mg before it helped, but at that level there was a somewhat annoying side effect-- about 20-30 minutes after taking my dose, I would feel very dizzy and light-headed for a while. Not the "fun" benzo-type dizziness either.
Depakote and Neurontin were mildly helpful. Mellaril was very helpful, but it's a phenothiazine antipsychotic... best to save that as a last option.
The benzos seem to vary the most when it comes to GAD, I think. Valium was the best for me, 10mg qid. It made me really depressed after having taken it for a few weeks straight, though. Same for Tranxene. Xanax worked all right (2mg tid) but the thing is, the first few weeks you take it, it gives you this buzz that really lets you know that it's working. Some people equate that "high" feeling to the effectiveness of the drug. So when they become tolerant to it, they think it's time to raise the dose. Same goes for Ativan and Serax, but to a lesser degree. Klonopin is wonderful for panic and SP, but does crappola for the GAD.
Equanil and Amytal are wonderful for GAD, but good luck getting prescriptions for either of these nowadays.
Good luck!
