I'm not in any way an expert on this, but I always thought that Wellbutrin/Zyban was prescribed for smoking cessation because of it's sedating effects. From what I understand, in early drug trials some patients being treated for depression were able to stop smoking as a consequence of taking Wellbutrin. I'm assuming this is because of it's sedative qualities on some patients...I can't imagine that you would spontaneously quit smoking because you're agitated.Obviously it doesn't work for everyone, or even most people. My medical insurance company won't pay for Wellbutrin when prescribed for smoking cessation despite the devastating health effects of smoking, so apparently the success rate doesn't warrant it. Personally, I found that Wellbutrin made me irritated. I guess it just depends on your own chemistry.
