I'm so sorry you are going through this (you may want to post on PPB for more support). I started cutting (SI- self-injuring) as a teen, I knew others who did it also. There are many reasons, for myself it was child abuse, for others a personality disorder. Basically it is a coping skill that usually comes as a result of anger turned inward, so as I said in an earlier post you have to learn healthier coping skills to replace it- like expressing your anger, etc. His therapist was correct, there's nothing they can do until he's ready. It sounds like he's not doing too much damage- does he try to hide it? If not, it may be a cry for attention. Are there other symptoms like problems in school? I am in my 30s, and until a year ago I didn't confront it and attempt to stop- I'm making slow progress, but I am improving. Most cutters or SIers are NOT suicidal, so please don't worry about that. I can only imagine how you must feel, I pray my children never do it. Take care, judy
