is promethazine ok for insomnia?

Posted by katekite on June 1, 2002, at 12:06:00

Phenergan or promethazine is an antihistamine type drug used for nausea. I was taking it this week for stomach flu and I can't recall sleeping so well. Now the flu is long gone and I've taken it a couple times and slept well. It really helps me sleep in, like instead of waking up at the end of a dream I go back into that next nice deep sleep cycle. I slept until 11 am this morning which just hasn't happened for 6 months or so, years ago it was normal for me.

So far it at least feels good compared to the benzo hangover. There's a hangover but its a more 'natural' feeling one. More of like a prolonged rub your eyes and stretch and need some coffee kind of hangover.

I've been told its ok to take benadryl, but for me that's pretty weak. Phenergan is more heavy-duty.

Anyone been warned off of it, is it addictive in any way, long term use?, or told its ok?

What is the most benadryl people have used to get to sleep and did it work, have side effects etc?

I really am tired of the benzo route, it really disturbs my long term well being.
