In reply to New Meds for anxiety/depression??, posted by Mason on April 10, 2002, at 17:46:44
There are a lot of new meds in the pipeline. the best ones i can think of are mixed agonists/antagonists in the same class of mechanism as nefazadone but also drugs which share a combination of nefazadones antagonism and rather than re-uptake of a monoamine mimication of its effect at the receptor in the same way buspirone exerts its effects on GAD. nefazadone which is a newer antidepressant was probably designed for the purpose of eliminating side-effects such as insomnia and sexual disfunction but the problem can be that people can become too sleepy on the nefazadone and that the post-synaptic receptor it blocks is the antidepressant one for some people. i think the newer GABAergic drugs such as pagoclone and pregabalin sound a better bet for GAD. i always thought for generalised anxiety specifically, the benzodiazepines were far superior to the SSRI's.
