The prescription itself may have a box to check for brand name only. If it does, ask your doctor to mark it. Otherwise, as Shelli suggested, be sure to state your preference to your pharmacist. Frequently, they just assume you'd rather save money.
However, one last thought -- if you occasionally take two (instead of one, for instance), your physician may be willing to write the prescription for "one or two as needed," doubling the amount you get, saving you money and trips to the pharmacy. Then, even if you got generic, you'd be sure to have enough.
By the way, "generics" must be within 80% of stated potency -- by law, nothing generic should be only "half as strong."
