In reply to weaning from effexor, getting angry and mean, posted by angel1 on January 31, 2002, at 5:40:54
Angel,
Oh, you bet it can cause anger, rage, irritability. It's almost as if all the rage has been waiting in the wings and then floods out when the meds are stopped. I'm usually a very kind and loving person (in my 'normal' state). When I was coming off zoloft, I punched a hole through a wall so as not to deck my husband. I also broke into hysterical sobbing at work. There are many lawsuits pending against makers of prozac, paxil and I believe effexor because of suicides, murders, etc., that have been blamed on the effects of SSRIs and their discontinuation too quickly. There is a neurochemical imbalance at this point until your brain adjusts. If you haven't yet started to experience the electric zaps and whooshy feelings in your brain, you're in for another ride. I sure hope you're taking this weaning very very sloooooooooowly. Effexor is definitely not something to expect yourself to be clear of within a week, or even two or three.
You might ask for an anti-anxiety med, klonopin, to get you through until the worst of the weaning is over. It really helps. And please have patience with yourself. It's not so for everyone, but this can be a very rough time lasting months. Definitely stay away from alcohol. Whew! that's really asking for trouble. -- Barbara
