For me, a panic attack is like this. Imagine that you had suddenly materialized inside a pitch black, sinking U-Boat while at the peak pain of drowning, and feeling the dread (and obviously panic)of being fatally entombed.
Then repeat the experience over and over while never getting 'used' to it. That is what panic disorder is like for me (I mean, when not on effective medication). Suffering terrible deaths over and over without actually dying.
Apparently being administered with a good GABA antagonist is the best way to induce panic attacks in 'normal' people. I don't suggest you try it: typical quotes from the normal subjects were along the lines of 'completely unbearable' and 'the worst experience of their lives'.
In short, the pain of panic disorder is astonishing and (keeping with the military theme) I would not have even wished it on Hitler or Stalin (both of whom I despise above all others).
