I take 4800mg/day divided into 1200mg every six hours.The half-life is 8 hrs, and I really can notice when I miss a dose.
That's the one frustrating thing about Neurontin --- you have to take it periodically all day.
Your husband's depression could be helped if he upped the dosage. I needed to take the max of 4800mg for relief.
