What causes seizures from benzo withdrawls.

I friend of mine was addicted to both ghb and xanax and ambien. He was taking alot like 3mg of xnax , 25ml of g and 20-40mg of ambien. I believe this seizuree and hospitilaization is due to loss of gaba functioning? Does this causes seizures and coma if abusin gaba meds too long and high dose and stopping?
i take only .5mg of xanax and some ghb to relax. i find when i stop both i feel very wierd like my skin is crawling, parinoia, doom,. More so would i benefit if i started on neurontin and klonopin?
