I may be one of the few who has had a nice effect from Buspar at times, and I recall a few times after being under much stress, I would take my evening Buspar dose with a benzo, feel really good, and yes...it did some nice stuff for my sexual appetite too. :-) (My g/f at the time was happy, I must say;-) I would awake the next day a happy guy:-)

But, with all of this damn stigma around benzo's, it seems people are getting forced to take all sorts of weird meds (like just Buspar alone, which I think is worthless), as well as atypical antipsychotics, which I don't seem harm in using, but they do very, very, VERY little with chronic and acute forms of anxiety and panic. They are very helpful for those in an acute mania, and maybe aggitated depression, but I would still go with maintenance benzo's. You know that feeling after taking an extra couple of Xanax..:-) No, not everyday, but to me benzos can "restart" me in crappy times. It's almost like I fall in love, like this happy-go-lucky guy who loves anything and everything. (Which is, really, my personality!) Much like the experience people report when taking E. I hate this anti-drug propoganda, but I would think benzo's to may be a bit less toxic than E, so I guess I am lucky. Now, if only I can hit my doc up for long term maintenance benzo's.

I've been on benzos for years. Do you have anxiety that you feel is responsible for causing depression? If so, BZD's are for you. Cut all the AD crap. I went through all of that and you have to take a BZD anyway. BZD monotherapy short AND long term is endorsed by the World Heath Organisation as safe if monitored and managed properly and if the patient truly has a chronic anxiety disorder.

Psychiatrists specialising in treating anxiety disorders (not your typical psychopharmacologist) would have no quarrel if you told them that BZD's works for you. They are finding more and more that monotherapy with BZD's are useful and not any harder to taper off of thatn SSRI's (why would you want to taper off of a maintianence dose of BZD's anyway if you have a chronic condition with anxiety I always ask?)

If you don't like the fact that what you say about how you feel like yourself on BZD's is not being heard by your doctor, FIRE THEM! They're YOUR employee. It's called a second opinion. Go to someone that will listen to what you say for once. If a patient doesn't respond fully enough to a med, many psychaitrists blame the patient when it's the medicine to blame (or actually the doctor in the end). You found a med that works - now go find a doc that'll RX you some because they'll listen to what you're telling them.

It's time that the stigma, which is a remnant from the late 60's and the Valium days, be disputed and put to bed. The profiteering from the Pharms. because ssri's are Brand and the BZD's are not is unconscionable.

You don't need something to enhance the BZD that works for you....you need to find the right BZD and take a sufficient enough dose! BZD's are more often than not UNDERutilised rather than OVERutilised while one is on them.
