No, some cheeses are safe: American, cottage, cream, and ricotta are all fine. Mozzarella cheese used on most pizzas has also been found to be harmless, and I've never heard of a confirmed hypertensive reaction to pizza (although it could happen if it was some sort of exotic pizza with sharp cheeses on it). Cheddar is the most common cheese that is unsafe with MAOIs.

It's more important to remember that certain drugs interact unfavorably with MAOIs. Over-the-counter decongestant pills such as pseudoephedrine should be avoided.

If you want my "short list" of foods and drugs that interact with MAOIs, you can search the Psycho-Babble archives.

Sometimes, especially in the afternoon.

Yes.

Frequent.

There's no trick. It doesn't really matter how many times a day you take Nardil. Most people need a total daily dose of at least 60 mg, although occasionally 45 mg is enough.

> how about hypertensive reactions? anyone have any and what did they do about it? nifidipine? what dose?

10 mg. The best way to take it is probably to bite it in half and then swallow it (it's a gelcap). You can check your BP and take another 10 mg if it's not going down (ask your doctor how often you should do this). It's a good idea in general to monitor BP after taking nifedipine because it can cause a "crash." It's important to drink plenty of water if you need to take nifedipine; dehydration increases the risk of problematic low blood pressure.

I'm not sure what Lorraine meant about "histamine" side effects. I've never heard of any effect of Nardil on histamine receptors. If her stuffy nose was a side effect, it was an idiosyncratic one -- congestion or stuffy nose is not a documented side effect of Nardil.
