Go to a psychiatrist who specialises in psychopharmacology (medical treatment of psych disorders) -- Cam's suggestion of talking to a GP seems like a good idea too (in general Cam's suggestions tend to be good ones). Say you've looked into it and you think you might be helped by propranolol or the like. Mention some of the books or articles you've read, if you think it would be helpful. Explain that you have uncomplicated performance anxiety and don't have the resources for extensive psychotherapy, if they suggest that.
I'm somewhat surprised that you've been unable to get a prescription for a beta blocker. It's not like they're controlled substances or something.
