My pdoc told me that quite a few of the "SSRI"'s work on both SEROTONIN and NOREPINEPHRINE (Paxil being an example), but when Effexor first came out there was some kind of problem with their capsules (hard to swallow or something), so the manufacturer of Effexor lost ground to other new a-d's and in order to regain momentum, the manufacturer of Effexor pushed (marketing, politics) and probably shelled out big bucks for its Effexor to be "the only anti-depressant recognized by the FDA as effective for generalized anxiety" !! In a nutshell, it boils down to a combo of politics, money and marketing strategy as the reason why Effexor is the only one which is claimed to have this effect officially.
