In reply to Imipramine (tofranil)- A good choice for Gad?, posted by elderweissblue on June 25, 2001, at 15:20:02
> I went to an anxiety page and it said that imipramine was good for GAd, and I also know it is antidepressant. My depression is chronic low level depression, or rather dysthmia. I would rather avoid Srri's because of agitation side effect. What is the side effect profil for Tofranil, is it tolerable? Any body take it and have comments to add?
I take imipramine 75 mg at bedtime for generalized anxiety which I started about 7 months ago, plus Wellbutrin for major depression that I've been on for about 4 years. I have no side effects with the Wellbutrin, but going on the imipramine was a bit more difficult. I had some lightheadedness, hot flashes, nausea, and dry mouth. All of the side effects are gone now except the dry mouth, which is better now than when I started. I had a blood level drawn about a month after I started it, which showed therapeutic levels of the medication, and I have to have another drawn next month. I believe that imipramine is cardiotoxic at high doses, so that's why the blood level needs to be monitered. I had tried Paxil for the GAD, but didn't like it and that's why my psychiatrist, who is a professor at a medical school, suggested imipramine instead. I'm doing well now, but had some ups and downs for the first few months of imipramine. Hope it works well for you!
