I ahve quite Effexor cold turkey before, and it was total hell.. So bad I was on the verge of suicide just to stop it all happening. I am currently weaning off slowly, and having no problems.. I am down from 300mg to 150mg so far and have had no withdrawal effects.. I am doing it very very slowly though.
