Richelson: Raphe Serotonergic firing rates

Posted by JohnX on April 17, 2001, at 3:51:34

I'm very curious about the mechanisms involved in the regulation of the raphe serotonergic firing rates.
I've looked at the slides, but was unable to view the presentation, sorry if my questions could have been answered in the presentation.

Its my understanding that hyperactive raphe serotonergic firing can cause anxiety, is this correct?
What typically is the net effect post response of raphe serotenergic firing rates for SSRIs's?

From what I have read benzos, especially Klonopin, substantially dampen raphe sertotenergic firing? Agree?
Also, how is the mechanism achieved?

I'm very curious about the presynaptic a2 heteroreceptors. Its my understanding that they are activating by norepinephrine? How is this mechanism achieved? Is there a diffusion of norepinephrine from cells in other tracts (such as the locus ceruleus)?
Would guanfacine (a2 agonist) administration impact serotenergic firing rates?

Lastly, what is the impact of pindolol or propranolol administration on raphe serotenergic firing rates? I've read a lot of conflicting data on this question.

Thanks,
John
