I have been taking Nortriptyline for several years, and for at least 2 of those have been at the lowest dosage that gives me benefit, 40mg/day at night. It has helped me as an AD, for sleep problems, and for fibromyalgia sx, so I consider it very valuable.
I gained about 60 pounds over about 3 years, but was also taking Depakote (moderate dose, 125-250mg/day), which might have contributed. Also, I am not very good (at this point in my life) about exercising or maintaining a good diet).
When I started Topomax (I am BP II), I lost 40 pounds in 10 months, without changing my habits! However it was not impressive as a mood stabilizer for me, and gave me some (moderate but significant) cognitive problems. I tried staying on it at a very low dose as the weight loss continued even then, but I had to stop because I just couldn't find words. If I could have, I would have stayed on it just for the weight loss.
I continued to very slowly lose weight after stopping (about 5 months ago), and starting on Lamictal- which I gather causes weight gain for some people, loss for fewer. Now I'm not losing weight but not gaining it either- except when I'm really stupid about my eating. I'm still about 30 pounds overweight.
I hope that this helps,
Cece
