As most of us know, the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) creates great challenges for Pdocs. The disorder, which is largely biological, has no monotherapy, and worse, no accepted polytherapy…
It took ages to diagnose me as a mild borderline, as I’ve suffered from anxiety, and anxiety disorders are very easy to diagnose. However, in my behavior and cognitive constructs I am closer to BPD than anything else.
Reading the research has given me little hope by far… No drug but benzodiazepines tend to lessen my anxiety, still they worsen my BPD symptoms.
Ads bring only little relief. SSRIs work but only a little. MAOI,RIMA,SNRI,bupropion,nefazadone to name a few does nothing. Actually, anything which enhances noradrenergic neurotransmission makes things worse.
No antipsychotic is suitable for me – I’m in too good a state to take a risk of extrapyramidal symptoms. Olanzapine might be OK, but I don’t want to gain weight…
My core symptoms, by the way, are splitting, extrovert dependence, instability in work and interpersonal relationships, unstable self image, emptiness, boredom,anger . Impulsivity and affective instability happen less often. I am not suicidal.
So, I started thinking of gabapentin. I think of it since it effects GABA, which might be good for me, while it stabilizes mood (so I won’t get out of control). What do you say about it ? Any idea about other drugs ? I am about to visit a great expensive psychopharmacologist next week, so I want to know the possible options…
