My doctor and I agreed to a low dose of an SSRI (Paxil)to go with the effexor I'm taking. I currently take 112.5 mg of effexor xr. I started with 10 mg of Paxil, then 20, and now 30. This is beneficial to me now. I think your doctor is right about lowering the effexor xr when you combine 2 antidepressants. As for Serotonin Syndrome-I think that the combination at lower doses is pretty safe. Effexor is not an SSRI, too. I think that fact greatly lessens chances of Serotonin Syndrome, too. I hope you will also do more research on this on your own to get more opinions-there is also http://www.drkoop.com
where you can check drug interactions-they are heavily researched there. Good luck!
