I'm going to be going to graduate school in Davis, California and would like recommendations on good psychiatrists. The school health plan is very limited, lots of onerous terms about previously existing conditions not being covered for the first 6 months etc. I'm probably going to have to pay out of pocket. The school shrink may be fine, but I want to be prepared. Also, I know that they always refer longer-term cases out. I also have a hard time trusting Student mental health services. (Dr. Bob aside, of course) So, I'd like to have some names in mind.
In a therapist and/or psychiatrist I want someone who is intelligent and open-minded. Someone might be a very good counselor for a lot of people, but if I think the person is stupid--or rather that I'm a million times smarter, then I won't trust the therapist. An ideal pdoc would be up on the literature and willing to explain his or her treatment recommendations and their in a way that isn't condescending. Even better would be a doctor who explained the clinical decisions, and if tehre was research supporting a course of action, I'd hope that the doctor would provide me with a photocopy.
I may need an endocrinologist. If I do, I'd like one who would be open to working with a pdoc.
Thanks,
Abby
