Jane has a good point. If sex probs is an issue, Wellbutrin is a good choice, unless of course you've already tried it.
I really think the sexual effects from one person to the next are too different to predict in advance how you will respond to an SSRI. Here's my experience though...
Paxil: Dimished interest, rarely able to get it up or keep it up. Numb. Profoundly disturbing. Very bad.
Zoloft: Absolutely no desire, beginning an hour after my very first 25mg dose and continuing for 3 months regardless of dose. Able, but not interested. Partially numb.Profoundly disturbing. Bad.
Celexa: No desire, partial ability, numb. Again, disturbing. Bad.
Effexor: Same as Celexa. Bad. By this time, believe me, there was no way in hell someone could have convinced me Prozac would be any different. Quite distressed with SSRIs. But had one left to go...
Prozac: Desire is better than I can ever remember. Ability is better than I can ever remember. No numbness. Enhanced sensitivity. Fabulous. Sex takes longer to finish, but with the increased desire and stronger performance, "she" LOVES my Prozac. She said so, in those exact words! :)I am continually amazed at the differences between SSRIs. I mean, they all do the same thing - inhibit reuptake of serotonin - but with such drastically different results. I don't get it. I never would have believed it if I hadn't tried them all myself. I still can't believe my sex life on Prozac is better than at any time in my life. Wish it worked that well on my depression.
In case you're wondering, current dose is 30mg. Also, first week was distressing for sex life. Felt like all the other SSRIs at first. But that went away quickly, unlike all the others. And then, quite by surprise, everything was better than ever.
But someone else's story will be just the opposite. I don't think one can predict. I have talked to a couple docs that think Paxil is the worst, Zoloft second worst. I agree. But you just never know.
