Glenn:
Cortisol levels seem to be implicated in depressive illness. Aspirin lowers cortisol levels, as does an expensive supplement called phosphatidyl serine (800-1000 mgs). Itraconazole and ketaconazole have solidly established cortisol lowering properties. As a matter of fact, I've read two accounts in psychiatric journals of patients suffering from intractable depressions becoming symptom-free within 10 days taking 400 mg ketaconazole b.i.d. Both persons had "atypical" depressions that wouldn't respond to all major AD's or ECT. An endocrinologist consult might help. Good luck.
