Stopping Lexapro

Posted by lansmom on April 19, 2008, at 17:28:07

My 9 year old daughter has been on 10mg of Lexapro for 2+ years. I want her off of it but understand there can be significant withdrawal issues. Can you recommend a way forward to get her off of this drug?? I have reason to believe that her cortisol levels are high - initially from a traumatic past (she is an international adoptee) and have now learned that Lexapro can increase cortisol even further. I want to get her neuro-transmitters tested - but after she is off Lexapro - and find alternative ways to treat her.

I would have the taper done under her doctor's supervision. I wouldn't feel comfortable offering any advice regarding a child that young, other than if her doctors agree she should be off Lexapro, make sure the taper is done very, very slowly to allow her system to adjust and to minimize any discomfort for her.

Take care
