Okay, upon the advice of a Rhumetologist to whom I was sent (somewhat randomly) I am switching to Flexeril to help me sleep instead of Xanax. So, I need to withdraw from the Xanax which I only take at night (3mg). Any advice on a schedule? Words of advice? I know that Xanax is short acting and that it's odd to only take it once a day but, none the less, I seem to be having "classic" withdrawal symptoms.

Hi there cg1973,
I strongly recommend that you read and take the Heather Ashton manual to your doctor:
http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/index.htm
And here is a specific schedule for Xanax 4mg (you would have to adjust slightly lower for 3mg, but your doc could figure this out given the 4mg schedule:
http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/bzsched.htm#s7
This is the most humane way to withdraw off a benzo IMO. Let me know if you have any questions, as I know the manual well. You may also want to post this on the withdrawal board, or Dr. Bob may redirect it pretty quickly... Good luck with stopping the Xanax, let me know if I can help!
Regards,
PX1

What works for me may or may not work for you, but I was on 5.5mg Xanax (in divided doses) per day for a few years. The way I discontinued it was to go straight to diazepam and taper.
I stopped Xanax completely on 31 July 2005 @ 5.5mg/day and substituted with 80mg diazepam in divided doses. The next day I took 60mg, then 40mg and finally 20mg on the 4th day.
The first day on diazepam I felt a tense feeling from Xanax withdrawal like my head was a TV camera and felt like some sort of "junkie", but it wasn't terrible.
The next few days I was just fine and continued on 5mg diazepam 4x/day. Now I'm only on 5mg 3x/day and doing fine.
I hope this helps. :-)
Best wishes,
Paul

Yes since I'm on valium I know long time 35 years and have been randomly switched with whatever was popular at the time. Sometimes depending on how stable life was I just cut down on my own at one time was benzo free on no meds. No withdrawal but valium with the long half-life should work well. You're already on some so I don't think you will have any seizure but best to check with pdoc. Does flexaril have any benzo properties? Could the side effects be from it have no idea just thinking. What exactly are you withdrawal symptoms and what else might you be taking with it. I mean did he give you something to switch too? Are you taking it for anxiety like I am? rsk
