Remeron - Extreme Gas Problems After Stopping

Posted by tiredofpanic on September 20, 2006, at 9:53:40

Hi folks,

Although maybe a funny topic, maybe some of you have experienced this and if so I need your help.

I have been experiences severe gas/flatulance since stopping Remeron last month. I did gain some weight, which has not completely gone away yet, but I have a lot of air in my intestines that just does not seem to want to go away. Has anyone else expereinced this after stopping this medication and if so what have you done to cope with it or cure it?

Thanks,

ToP

>Hi
dont know if this will help... ive been off Remeron for 4months now... sucessfully.. at the beginning I had some gas, diarreha, nausea, etc. I just "rode" it through.. drank gingerale for the nausea,,, drink LOTS of water, eat Healthy.. and it eventually passes.. remember it takes a LONG time for the body to come back to its NORMAL state after Remeron... I had gainded 45 lbs while onit.. never a wt problem before always slim.. anyways 4months later I finally lost almost all but 10lbs of it... especially this last month ,, my metabolism is definitely normalizing.. it feels GOOD..
Hang in there.. try not to medicate yourself to overcome a past MED.. its a bad vicious circle to get into..
Hope this helps
Musky

Hi Musky,

Thank you for your reply. I was only on Remeron for about 2-3 weeks and it has been now over 45 days since I have stopped taking it. I do not feel it should take this long to get back to normal. I did not like the medication so that is why I stopped. My weight increased by 10lbs during that time also, and I still have some of the extra weight now.

I had some bowel issues while on the medication, and then when I stopped, but now it is a gas problem, and it is really not comfortable sometimes...

I have been off of Remeron for 4 days and have had *bad* problems with gas, loose stools, nausea, etc. starting a day or two after I went off. No appetite at all. My head doesn't feel so good either. I hear that I might have weeks or months left to go. I probably went off too quickly. I went from 30mg to nil in 10 days or so. Had been on it almost 3 months.

So you feel better, the gas was horrible for about two days and it is still em, problematic, today! It is a bit better than yesterday and much better than the day before.

The good news is that my jerking limbs have calmed down considerably and my visual problems, while still not right, are better. The bad news is that Remeron controlled my anxiety very well and I will have to find a new approach.

Hey Tired of panic,

since it's been 45 days, it may be that you have altered the flora of your gut- you can gradually wait for the little yeasties and bacteria to battle it out, or you can try to repopulate with the happy healthy "probiotics"

Yogurt, Kefir, etc- look on the container- contains live and active cultures, including acidophilus, bifidus, caseinus, I'm totally butchering these, but the more the merrier.

In the meanwhile, you can avoid foods that will rot in your gut, like meat. Avoid non-cultured dairy (milk, cream, ice cream and certain cheeses- high in lactose) and avoid foods that have lots of sulfur- eggs, brocolli, brusselssprouts, meat, - beans may make stinky f*rts too. Stick to simple foods, and listen to how your tummy reacts to the foods. If tummy says "NO" then don't eat that thing again.

Drink plenty of water, get some activity to keep things in motion, and don't wear your belt too tight.

best wishes,
-Li

Thank you for your reply.

I do not think this is the problem, because I take Acidopholus/Bifidus regularly. Have so for two years.

However, your food suggestions are interesting, it could be that what I am eating is causing the problem. It is getting better, just very slowly.

I would recommend to anyone who wants to start medication to really think about it first. Sometimes the medication causes more problems without a cure or a benefit.
