Xanax and hydrocodone withdrawl at same time!

Posted by joeyd on June 14, 2006, at 15:42:00

A bit of history, I got back from Iraq about a year and a half ago and started taking Klonopan. I took it for a year and finally got off. (Man that was hard!) Right after I started feeling better, my wife and I lost our baby boy. This immidiately put me back on Klonopon and xanax. It was the only way to keep it together for my wife and daugter. (so I thought) At the same time I was taking Vicoden and percocet for a Line of Duty injury I had. Well, I realized the opiots got me throught the day and I started abusing them. Now I'm hooked on both. I've been to three doctors and they all say "just get off." Obviously it is easier said than done. I realy dug myself into a dich here. I dont know If I should get off the Benzos or the Opiots first. I cant do both and Function at all. Sadly I'm at the point that when I take them I am "normal." I take care of my wife (she has DVT) and my doughter and go to work. I dont want to be like this and need to be a good father and husband while "clean." I really need help and I think others experience will help. At this point doctors to me are useless. Thanks in Advance and sorry for the long post.

Joey

Hi there

You can't do both at once, unless you do some super-slow downward titration.

It is difficult because (as I'm sure you know) when one goes down the other goes up.

I've had the same problem.

Tell your commanding officer they probably have many like you. And try the substance use board. Love Phillipa. You've been through a lot and I know what it's like my Son lost his eyesight in Desert Storm and Two fingers and has a wife and two kid. My thoughts are with you. I really care.

Whether you do them one at a time or together, I think the most important things are to do it very slowly and in very small steps. Whatever tricks you have to use to make custom sized doses, do it. For example, instead of going from 2.0mg xanax to 1.5mg, go from 2.0mg to 1.8mg. Stay at each new dose until you feel you have stabilized there, maybe 4 days to 2 weeks. Don't be in a hurry.

If it takes months to do a long slow taper in very tiny steps, fine. Just keep your eye on the goal and don't rush it.

Just my opinions though.

Also, go to the alternative board and ask what can help. Supplements like gaba and taurine and magnesium can be of great benefit and can speed up the whole process.

MD's can be harsh. Try a DO.

Its sad that doctors can be so insensitive and disconnected with their patients. Particularly when the subject is communication and personal issues I think that DO's are better than MD's is that area. Not only that, they are often better general practioners (GPs) because their training is geared more toward General Practice. They are generally encouraged to go into General Practice rather than specialize. With the exception of psychiatry which makes good use of their particular, so called "holistic," and personalized training.
