withdrawal from Perduretas 50 mg? HELP PLEASE!

Posted by Wychequeene on June 10, 2006, at 2:40:52

Can anyone help with info regarding withdrawal from the above? I'm not sure if I'm sick, or withdrawing. LOL! I get the little buggers from BIOTRAN.CO.UK and take them for sciatica/herniated disc. I police myself and thought I was taking too many lately (appx. 4 a day) so decided on my own to just STOP. Thursday my last pill was at 4 pm. I usually take one at 8 or 9 pm, but actively chose not to do so. Slept fine. Woke Friday at 5 am like usual, made decision to take none. Found I had no appetite for breakfast. OK. No problem. Still no appetite by lunch. OK. Fine, but weird as I usually eat both meals. By 2:30 had rapid heartbeat, the chills, shakes. Left work, went home. Hubby said I felt feverish. By 5:00 I had the dry heaves (no food to upchuck - last meal had been Thursday dinner!) and diarrhea. Tossed and turned. I researched on 'puter and found that cold turkey may not have been the way to go if this was what I thought it was, so at 6 pm I took 1 pill. Slept through until 10 pm. Wanted juice. Napped, but hydrated with juice every half-hour or so until 2 am when hubby came to bed. I left for the sofa with dog. By then I was experiencing hot/cold flashes, sweats, tossing and turning again. Took half a pill. Slept til 5:30 am. Woke with headache, took other half. It's now nearly 8 am. Have no cravings for anything (pills or otherwise!), still hydrating with juice, appetite seems to be coming back as my tummy's rumbling and am not nauseous, no more sweats, etc. Urine seems a little 'thick.' Headache gone.

So. Was this illness or am I in for a good one?

Hello

After prolonged use, stopping codeine abruptly is likely to cause withdrawal symptoms. Restlessness, chills and diarrhea are common withdrawal symptoms. The dose should be reduced gradually if it is necessary to stop the medication.

In the treatment of pain, the recommended maximum dose of codeine is 60mg every 4 hours.

Regards

Ed

Thanks, the pills I use are 50 mg, and my usual routine was to take one every four/five/six hours or so. I have taken maybe three - all broken into halves, taken gradually from Saturday morning until (now) 7 AM on Sunday morning - since I posted last, nearly 24 hours ago. All sh*tty feelings have passed, and was able to eat - mashed potatoes, rice, plain pasta - all things that are my usual "sick" foods - LOL! Still hydrating. Slept through the night. I really think I had a corresponding episode of illness with my decision to quit, but that was enough of a scare to convince me to slow down regardless. What is your thought on that? Or am I just weaning down and feeling better? The symptoms seemed to vanish rather quickly for my doing without the usual dose. I expected them to stick around a bit if I wasn't doing my usual routine....

Hi again

Your symptoms sounded like withdrawal. Nausea is common. Codeine's withdrawal symptoms tend to peak within a day or two after stopping. You weren't taking a high dose, so I wouldn't expect the withdrawal symptoms to last too long.

Thanks. It's about 8 pm and have had only one-half since last writing, which took the edge off the sciatica. Sunday is a lazy day anyway - not much moving about. Feeling fine as to all other matters. Very fine, in fact. A slice of toast for breakfast and rice for lunch. Lots and lots of Crystal Lite Raspberry. LOL! I appreciate your input VERY much.

Hi

Are you still in need of medication for the pain? Perhaps your doctor would prescribe something?

I am doing VERY well, thanks. Taking only half of one twice or three times a day, and feel good about that. <smiles> Popping the occasional Aleve, especially if it rains. My doctor has told me that the sciatica is (supposedly) something I must "learn to live with" and so am trying to lose weight and gain muscle tone to ease the back pain and sciatic pain. I am sure if I had something stronger in the house (vicodin, etc.) I might take far too much of it, far too fast. I know this from personal experience, so I try to keep on the "lighter" side of meds when I am able.

At my last visit, doc provided me with a large handful of packaged samples of Skelaxin (non narc.) which also seem to be helping. Thank you so very much for your concern!
