Is this depakote withdrawal?

Posted by becksA on March 16, 2006, at 21:04:42

dx: mild cyclothemia, Anxiety Disorder, ADD

I'm tapering (not completely taking it away) my depakote. I have been on 1250mg daily, and went down to 1000mg a day. The first 2 days or so of that I felt EXTREMELY irritable, depressed, all around not good! That was 3 days ago now. Today (3 days into 1000mg I feel much better). Was that because of coming down from depakote? Thanks.

I'm not sure. Probably. I doubt it was an unrelated coincidence. I'm surprised that such a small dosage decrease should produce that kind of withdrawal reaction. It might have been a kind of temporary rebound reappearance of the symptoms of your illness.

Was there an increase in anxiety too? Trembling hands?

I'm glad you are feeling better.

That's good news.

If you don't mind my asking, why did you want to reduce the dosage of Depakote, and what dosage would you like to work down to?

I've always read that if anything, depakote will act as a slight depressant, and I thought I was beginning to feel some of that. My pdoc and I also think such a high dose of depakote may not even be necessary for my condition, so we're going to try and kill two birds with one stone.
