Effexor withdrawal while pregnant-help!

Posted by KBW on February 28, 2006, at 20:56:30

Hi! I suspected I was pregnant a few days ago, and while waiting for results, took the chance at going off Effexor XR cold-turkey to be safe. I am in fact pregnant and we are thrilled but I am suffering horribly-can't sleep, am hyper-sensitive to anything sensory, twitch constantly, have trouble focusing and seeing clearly... so many other things-I could go on & on. The worst is that my body is going through so much, yet I can't get but 20-30 minutes of rest at a time. Can anyone give me any info about whether or not this will go away? Has anyone had a similar experience? My highly regarded neurologist said flat out-get off of it and stay off-my only question now is if anyone knows any way to minimize symptoms or give me a glimmer of hope that this won't last nine months.

i was one of the few that had no effexor w/d symptoms but there have been many posts here about stages of w/d. you can google effexor and ck some out. just wondered why your neuro said to get off and stay off? i ask b/c i'm also pregnant and on 75 effexor about to drop to 37.5. i have gotten diff. opinions from several docs and they have all assured me effexor is okay right now...of course, i understand 100% if you can feel okay w/o meds.. i'm getting there FINALLY. feel free to babble me anytime.

Thanks for you response! I did at first get a doctor who said go ahead and take it for a while and then eventually taper off-but my newest neurologist, who is the head of our research university here, said he would never advise such, so I decided to believe him to be on the safe side. Because of my problem, I was taking three other meds also. His position is that there is no research one way or the other as the drug is too new, so he therefore advises against it. Funny you should say it, NO, I sure don't feel OK without it, but I'm trying to find a way to get through it. Thanks for your thoughts and best wishes for you!

I'd check the Withdrawal board here, and ask the question there as well. This thread is likely to be moved there, but in the meantime, there is a lot of good information there that should help you get through it.

While I understand your neurologist's advice, I think tapering would have been a better choice, just because Effexor withdrawal can be brutal for some people. What was your dose? I don't know if it's worth trying to take a little bit just to help you get past this.

A small dose of Prozac, though, should help minimize the symptoms, and it only has to be about one pill, once, so less risk to your pregnancy.

Good luck, and have a nice baby!

When Dr. Bob makes his rounds he'll redirect it. Why not post it there now? Fondly, Phillipa
