help me, risperdal withdrawals

Posted by beano on September 28, 2005, at 5:24:06

i was on risperdal for a couple of months, started on .5mg and ended up on 4mg. was on them for paranoia... came off them cause they just took away my whole personality and sex drive amongst other things.... when i was coming off them i got really bad panic attacks for a few days... then i was up and down with slight depression for a few days and then the last few days i was hit with the lowest depression ive ever felt in my life, its so low its like a pain, its killing me.. i have been off them for a week and a half... does anyone know how long this lasts because it is destroying me

Hi

Did you reduce your Risperdal dose gradually to get off it? You need to do this to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

You can restart Risperal at a low dose and come off it slowly next time.

If I were in your shoes I would definitely get back on it, stabilize, and then begin a long slow taper down. Risperdal has been stimulating your dopamine system. Take away that dopamine stimulation suddenly or too fast and bad news can expected.

Risperdal has a way of raising prolactin levels, which is probably the cause of the sexual probs.
I had that happen to me when I tried amisulpride years ago.

Zyprexa does not do that though. Another option might be to switch straight over to zyrexa, and then taper off of it. Since it comes in pills, you can cut to custom sizes for micro-weaning down.

i went to 3 mg for 2 days, 2mg for 2 days and then 1 mg for 2 days..... is that too quick of a taper off? what are my prolactin levels? my head is such a mess

Hi Beano

Yes, much too quick! You need to get a prescription for the 0.5mg tablets to help you taper.

Hi

I think you should restart Risperdal at 0.5mg/day and increase the dose in steps of 0.5mg/day every couple of days until you feel better. Then you can taper...........

I quit zyprexa after a couple of months 3 days ago and today and yesterday I've been having the worst sweating anxiety at work, it has been through the roof. I feel almost feverish from sweating. Do you possibly think this is due to the withdrawal? (I didn't taper)

Yeah, that tapering was way too fast I think. It would have maybe been better to drop down in smaller steps, and stay at each step for at least 3 or 4 days or even a week or two more before going down to the next step.

I don't think so, no. Start Risperdal at a low dose though eg. 0.5mg/day.
