Seroquel withdrawal is the pits!

Posted by Sonya on August 15, 2005, at 12:20:35

Even with fairly slow tapering to get off Seroquel, I've had to restart it because withdrawal symptoms were so debilitating. My max dosage was 50mg. I reduced by half every week until I was down to 6.25mg. Anxiety, headaches, nausea, fatigue became unbearable. Yesterday I returned to 25mg. Pdoc said this morning he doesn't know if symptoms are withdrawal. He suggested I stay on 25mg for 3 more days then start tapering from that again. I want off this drug! (I'm on no other meds.)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid withdrawal symptoms from antipsychotics?

Hi Sonya,

Perhaps a sedating antihistamine would help ease the withdrawal symptoms. You could try hydroxyzine (Atarax) - it's calming and might reduce nausea.

Thanks, Ed. I think that's a great idea. I've tried it before so know what it's like. In case my pdoc won't prescribe it, is there an OTC med that's similar?

Try Benadryl or Dramamine. They are both OTC and should help.
