Having problems with anxiety

Posted by christinav on April 2, 2005, at 19:18:24

I really need to hear some encouraging words. I feel like i am going nuts. Back in august i started taking wellbutin XL, buspar and trilptal( for depression, mood leveler and anxiety/panic attacks). So i have a bladder disease and my uroligist decided to give me neurontin for the pain. I started with the neurontin on jan 11th at 100 mg the first week, 200 2nd week and 300 the third week. Well i was still in pain and i went to the doctors and she wanted me to move up to 400mg and if that didnt help after the first week to go ahead and move up to 500mg. The first week there was no effect so i moved up to 500mg. Well about after two weeks i felt exhausted. That went away but about three weeks ago i started feeling heart palpatations. Didnt bother me too much until last week and then they really bothered me. Then this past week i started with panic/anxiety attacks and depression. Now this week i went from 500mg to 400mg then 200mg then nothing of neurontin cause i think that is the cause of the palpatations.

I am so confused. I have the panic/anxiety attacks. Heart palpatations are there but not as bad. I have been off the neurontin for almost three full days. I am so tense that i often catch my self trying to relax my upper body. Its so hard to explain.

I went to my doctors on friday and they started me on a low dosage of zoloft (12.5mg for one week) then after that up to 25mg.

I am scared i am going to feel like this forever. I have heard so many horror stories about this neurontin.

In the meantime i have found two things to slow down my anxiety and one of them the doctor told me to stop and thats (pharma Kava) kava-kava. The other is amino acid L-Theanine (helps reduce anxiety. Now the l-theanine is 200mg a piece and it says to take 1 capsule 1-2 times a day or recommended by a physician. I have already taken 2 today and i want to take one more. I honestly think i am losing it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

thanks,
christina

Hi, both buspar and wellbutrin made my anxiety worse. You might want to try vistaril or a benzo such as xanax for the panic attacks.
Also, are you in therapy as an adjunct to the medication treatment?

best wishes,

hi. I was wondering if your doctor had considered a beta blocker for your anxiety. I was and still am getting relief from most of my anxiety from paxil ( I know people hate paxil, but although I gained 40 pounds I really do not miss my paralysing anxiety!) anyway, I started getting some new anxiety symptoms/troubles and I've been taking Inderal LA for over a year now. I am almost completely free of the anxiety ( can leave my house, no migraines, etc) and I warn you. the kava can really hurt your liver! we have an evil liver disease that runs in the family, so we all stay away from kava

good luck, and I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I went back on a old medicine that helped (anafranil) so far i am doing better. I guess it wouldnt hurt to ask about a beta blocker too. He brought it up but i dont have a racing heart.

Thanks again.

I didn't have a racing heart either. I was having static ocular migraine. I've heard great things about anafranil...

Looking for info about Kava being toxic to liver. Studies that I have found showed that said liver problems were found in South pacific natives who consummed huge doses (far above pharmaceutical levels) of Kava extract tea. In looking for more information, found two books concerning that aspect.

1. "Kava: Nature's Stress Relief" by Dr. Kathryn Connor (MD) 1999

2. "Kava: The Miracle Antianxiety Herb" by Dr. Ray Sahelian (MD) 1998

That said, would not rate Kava as a viable alternative for anything beyond mild-to-moderate anxiety.

I have a question. How long did it take before the beta blocker started to help with anxiety? I have tried inderal and thought it should help right away? Did it take time for it to build up in your body before it worked for your anxiety?

Thanks,
Marsha
