Weight loss after Effexor?

Posted by Shannon17 on May 4, 2005, at 20:50:09

Has anyone had any luck losing weight after being off Effexor? I was on Effexor for almost a year and have gained 15 lbs. I have now been off of it for 15 days and am feeling a lot better....quite tired though. I want to know if I can expect my excess weight to "fall" of or is my metabolism shot forever?

ODD... (sorry, this may not help you any)... I started my "antidepressant journey" on Celexa, and either that, OR just being depressed, made me lose weight. When I started Effexor (150 mg) a year and a half later, it made me gain the weight back. I never really connected the two.. I always thought Celexa just made me lose the weight. I didnt know Effexor made me gain it. But the Celexa made me TOO skinny, and now I'm the weight I was before, so I guess I cant complain.

Im not a doctor by any means, but I would THINK that it would go away??? Hopefully??? :)

Hi Shannon,
My doctor told me that the weight will eventually come off once I'm off the medication that caused the weigh gain in the first place. I'm up about 20 or so pounds. It's like I opened my eyes one morning and there it was! My clothes don't fit me anymore. It seemed to have happened so fast. Anyway, I joined weight watchers last week and lost my first 3.8 pounds. So I am on my way (I hope). I'm trying not to beat myself up about it. I know it will be hard work to lose it but I don't want any memories or traces of my having been on Effexor. This particular side effect might take a while to remedy but I am relly determined. Good luck to you and check out weight watchers. It is pretty good. Not like a deprive yourself diet at all! Really do-able.
