Only 2 weeks on Cymbalta, Must I Taper?

Posted by flmm on May 4, 2005, at 10:11:54

I am only 2 weeks on Cymbalta, Lexapro mix. Tried to switch but have decided to stay on Lexapro, having sleep, anxiety issues. Can I quit Cymbalta cold Turkey after only 2 weeks? Been on lexapro 1 year.

You could, but it's not wise. Tapering is a precautionary move. If done right, you don't notice the withdrawal at all. Not tapering, on the other hand, is a bit of a crap shoot.....emphasis on the crap.

How do I cut the capsules in half?

Cymbalta is an unusual med, the way it's supplied. Inside the capsule are tiny individual pills. Each one is coated to prevent dissolving in the stomach (enteric coating). The dose you take is proportional to the number of those little pellets you take. So, if you remove a third of the pellets, you've got 2/3 of a dose remaining in the capsule. If you remove half the pellets, you've got half the dose.

If you've got lots of Cymbalta capsules, just progressively dump more and more of the little pellets out each day, until you're down to a third or less of the total amount. Totally customized taper, however you want to do it.

If you don't have a lot of capsules to work from, you can buy empty caps at health food stores, or empty out other capsules that you might have around.

The capsule itself isn't important, except that it protects the pellets from getting chewed or broken in your mouth. That's all it's for, to get the pellets past your mouth intact.

I was always taken from one Ad to another without a taper and never had a problem. Of course none of them worked either. Fondly, Phillipa
