Lyrica for benzo withdrawal trial

Posted by reefer on April 25, 2005, at 21:46:12

I just tapered from 0.75 mg's of Klonopin per day to 0.5 mg per day a week or so ago. Though i didn't go through any type of horrible withdrawal i sure could feel it. Have been a bit irritable during the last 2 days and slept bad last night. So what i've decicided to try is to get off the last 0.5 mg's of Klonopin in a weeks time substituting with Lyrica for about 2 weeks and then getting off the Lyrica completly. I will post on this if anyone is interested in this, and if it works.

That's a very interesting approach. Please report your findings on the Withdrawal board also.

Good luck!

Though I personally don't intend to discontinue my clonazepam anytime in the foreseeable future, I would be very interested to hear how this works out for you -- keep us posted!

Okay people i will post daily on how this works or not works. I just obtained a 56 pack of 75 mg Lyrica. I took two a couple of hours ago and it took care of the residual withdrawal i had and gave me a feeling of being a bit drunk in a good way. It says to start with 150 mg per day the first week. So i'll take 75 mg in the morning and 75 mg in the evening and i think i'll try lowering the clonazepam from 0.5 to 0.25 on Thursday. Then i will raise the Lyrica to a maximum of 450 mg/day if needed, but i will try and use the lowest possible dosage that keeps the anxiety, restlessness and nausea at acceptable levels. I will not use excessive doses "just to be on the safe side". If you have any questions or want me to include any special information in my daily reports dont hesitate to ask!

What exactly is Lyrica?

That's exactly what I was going to ask! I guess I could google it. Fondly, Phillipa

Okay I "searched" it. It says it is approved for peripheral neuropathy and some other sort of pain. So how does this help with benzo withdrawal? Fondly, Phillipa

I am currently using 600mg of gabapentin (lyrica'a cousin) to try and do the same thing. Ironically the same dose.

Something tells me that you will encounter trouble going from .5 to .25mg. You might want to consider cutting that .25mg into two pieces and taking it a tad slower.

In any event, please keep us up to date! Obviously there are more than few less than 'perfectly satisfied' benzo users around. Myself included!

I think the use of anticonvulsants to mitigate benzodiazepine withdrawal syndromes should be explored further. I am curious about Depakote. Has anyone been on Depakote while trying to withdraw from a benzo or SRI?

Scott, I was on 250mg ER Depakote during the time I went off my tad of Celexa. It's been 45 days since I stopped the SSRI. I don't know if the Depakote helped any or not, but it wasn't too bad. The next project is to get my clonazepam down from .5 to .25mg or OFF. I thought being off the Celexa would trigger panic, but it hasn't. I just got some Keppra again from my pdoc, and I think *that* one will be the ticket to get off or halve the clonazepam I'm on. I need to cut it down, because the clon is CLEARLY depressogenic (esp. w/o an AD). --- Mitch

I can't stay on the Lyrica. I'm having trouble at 150mg/day feel like GBL(precursor to GHB). GHB or GBL never gave me any anxiety relief and Lyrica doesn't either. I'm feeling anxious, spacy and nauseated. I might get on this stuff when i'm stable on the benzo. And try to get to the higher dosage where there might be anxiolytic properties. But this clearly isn't as good as a benzo. As of now i can't see how this can be anxiolytic. For me it feels more anxiogenic.
