Withdrawal from Cymbalta? Anyone know?

Posted by Racer on April 20, 2005, at 7:48:32

I've been through Effexor "discontinuation", so I'm concerned. Does anyone know if Cymbalta has a similar withdrawal ahead for me? I've been on it now since late August of last year, and just ran out. My pdoc is out of town, his office has not gotten back to me about refilling it, etc.

I'm less concerned about being out, since I am not convinced that it's actually doing anything for me at this point, but I am concerned about going into withdrawal.

So, again, does anyone know is I'm likely to suffer much in the next few days?

Thanks!

Cymbalta has a longer halflife than Effexor...

so I don't think it should be as bad as what you previously experienced, especially if you are on additional pyschiatric drugs.

Good luck!

Colleen

I was on 60mg of cymbalta for about 3 months, and felt as you do that it wasn't doing anything for me. So I cut first to 30mg and then the Board suggested cutting down by granules so I did this. I didn't have any side effects. I don't think I would have if I had stopped it cold as there were none when I went from 60 to 30mg. And I've always been on a benzo with AD's. If you don't want to go off sometimes the pharmacy will let you have a few to tide you over or call your pdoc for you. Fondly, Phillipa

If you have a 10 or 20mg Prozac laying around, it helps me to come off short half life meds tremendously and all you need is a single dose.

Answering my own question

Well, I ran out of Cymbalta on Thursday, and here it is Sunday -- and I'm a MESS. I feel sick, as though I'm either going to pass out or throw up, and I am NOT a joy to be around. I didn't put this together, but my husband -- innocently -- asked on the way home from the supermarket, "Didn't you just run out of some medicine?"

DUH!

So, I've called the chemist, who will be supplying some Cymbalta to me -- TODAY.

If anyone cares, I guess I can post back about how long it takes to get over this, once I get the meds on board...

By the way, I am depressed, as well, so knowing that I will have withdrawal to look foward to if I stop Cymbalta is oh-so-day-brightening...

Hi racer,

I hope you get some more Cymbalta ASAP!

On a positive note, if you do come off the med you will TAPER off instead of cold turkey and that will make all the difference in the world. You will still feel it, but not like you are now.

Feel better soon.

Racer,
Do the taper slowly and take a Prozac or another SSRI at the end before going off completely. You will probably have minimal, if any, problems that way. I got off of Effexor with only two bad days and those 2 days could have been avoided had I taken the Cymbalta 2 days earlier. Don't sweat it. I think it can be done quite painlessly if done right - at least that's been my experience and I'm very meds sensitive.

Take care,
Kara

Sorry to hear that you're having a bad time, Racer. So am I - misery DOES love company - and I'm going back up to 60mg of Cymbalta and keeping an eye on my blood pressure.

Meanwhile I am trying to figure out if I should continue trying to work while I am so utterly in the gutter here. It's not so much that I am not motivated but can't stop crying and it's poor form for the front desk....

As for the husband/car/relationship condumdrum, I definitely think it's worth addressing, as without our SO's emotional support our struggles can seem insurmountable. With my guy sometimes literally propping me up - he walked me around the beach yesterday - I know there would be many weekends I would never get out of bed, much less get out of the house.

And, as ever, feel free to email me and vent as much as you like.

I stopped Cymbalta practically cold with no problems. I had been taking 60mg/d for four months. I tapered down to 30mg/d for two days, then stopped altogether. I had no negative reactions at all.
