running out of lamictal--how to taper off?

Posted by smokeymadison on April 8, 2005, at 0:34:44

I am going to run out of lamictal here in a couple of days. I am currently on 100 mg and need to know how to taper off. what are withdrawal effects for this med? would it be all right to take 50 for a few days and then 25 for a few days or should i take 50 every other day for a week and then 25 for a few days and then every other day for a few days?

the med really did help me and i want to go back on it as soon as i can afford it or when i find a program to help me afford it. would i have to titrate the same way i did when i first went on it? that took forever.

I stopped it cold turkey @ 150 mg. It was making me depressed so stopping sooner than later was ideal. I didn't suffer any ill effects and once it was out of my system the brain fog lifted.

You can taper right away. I did it in 4 days (from 200.) I didn't really get too many side effects, maybe a headache. HOWEVER, if you want to keep taking it, you should try everything you can NOT to stop. You will have to do the same taper up process, even if you only miss 2-3 days. Call your pdoc and explain the situation. Maybe you can get samples. You don't want to have to do that gradual taper up again though.

Best,
EE

Maxime, did you find anything to help you, or jsut no meds? Have been on Lamictal 5 weeks, up to 100mg. My brain fog is worse than before, plus I get very angry. I am quitting cold turkey today. My PDOC said it was OK to quit.
