Anyone taper from Antipsychotics?

Posted by JACJ on February 27, 2005, at 12:41:06

I tapered way too fast from Geodon. I went from 80mgs to 0 in 3 weeks. I will be off a year in April and am doing so well but still have to recover somewhat. Can anyone tell me about their experience?

Thanks,
JACJ

What were the consequences of doing this? What did you experience?

How do you know it was too fast?

I should have done a 10 percent reduction ever 7-14 days. I had terrible anxiety and fear with obsessive thoughts and twiching but I also went off Ativan which caused twitching too. I still have a little w/d but feel like a new person. For one night I had internal shakes for 24 hours among other things. The w/d was the worst thing I ever went thru. I was scared cause I found out AP's cause TD and no doctor never told me this.

I am very happy that you are feeling better.

I am very unhappy that your doctor didn't mention EPS and TD. If anything, a proper explanation of these things might have made you less scared of taking drugs like Geodon and Zyprexa by placing the risks into perspective. Better you should learn about TD from your doctor than out in the "gutter" with us :-). How horrific that must have been for you to discover on your own.

How do you feel about APs now?

I am very mad and upset still about this b/c I was just a person with some anxiety and depression and this was all for nothing!! I am fine now and why I was I put on these heavy hitting drugs. I don't think people realize how bad AP's are. I was DX as Bi-polar II with psychotic features. The DX was all b/c of my reaction to the drugs and nothing more. Who know if I have permanent damage or if I will siffer from this down the line. I don't think I will but you never know. My goal is to make people realize these drugs are bad and can contribute so many side effects which doctor's blame on the illness one has. I have done tons of research and have talked to hundreds of people and these AP's need to be stopped IMO.

It would seem unusual that you would be prescribed a neuroleptic for mild depression and anxiety.

> I am fine now and why I was I put on these heavy hitting drugs.

That was probably the reason.

> I don't think people realize how bad AP's are.

Unfortunately, they are the best we have at the moment. They have a crucial place in the armamentarium of psychiatric drugs, that, until better treatments become available, will continue to change people's lives for the better.

> Who know if I have permanent damage or if I will siffer from this down the line.

I'm sure you will come across much debate about this. However, I think you will find that most people consider Geodon one of the drugs least likely to produce irreversible effects.

> My goal is to make people realize these drugs are bad and can contribute so many side effects which doctor's blame on the illness one has.

I'm sure some clinicians become confused by the idiosynchratic reactions some of their patients have to the drugs they prescribe, but I don't think you can generalize this to psychiatry as a whole.

> I have done tons of research and have talked to hundreds of people and these AP's need to be stopped IMO.

I have seen severe psychotic states up close in people whom have bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder. I have seen what has become of their lives and their moment by moment concious experiences. My my opinion differs with yours. I think it is critical that these drugs remain available.

What would you propose to do to treat these people without the benefit of neuroleptic antipsychotics?

I, too, am wondering what else you suffered from your withdrawal. I went too fast off zyprexa. I agree with you that APs are terrible drugs. I am suffering a lot from going off, and I wasn't on very long.
