I've recently been on lexapro for around a month. I have noticed it is helping with anxiety and some depression, however I am concerned about my recreational drinking and the occasional use of marijuana while on this medication.
I don't want to get off the meds so I can drink etc, but I guess i'm a young student who is going to be faced with situations where alcohol is always readily available.
I have noticed that the effects of alcohol are more pronounced on lexapro, and know now that I am going to have to limit myself if i drink on the meds..
I guess my question is, is it best that i'm medicated if I want to partake in social drinking and the occasional joint.. or are the risks reason enough to get off this medication.. I know I want my cake and wish to eat it to and I'm sure people are faced with this dilemma quite often..
any comments appreciated

well, i see you posted this some time ago but I just now read it. I first started taking Lexapro 4-5 years ago. At first, it actually increased my urges to drink!!! Lexapro tends to make me sleep 20 hours a day, no lie!! So when I drank on this medication, I slept 20 hours AND SOME. I take my lexapro at night before bed... so when I know that i am going out to drink, I just don't take it that night. It doesn't really do anything, side effect wise. Ofcourse, the med won't FULLY work the way it should when mixing alcohol. If you're just an occasional drinker, like once every few weeks type of thing then I don't think it's such a big deal. Luckily lexapro is not like XANAX, which people abuse with alcohol all the time.
I am not proud of it, but I've been on Lexapro for 4-5 years and have been drinking the entire time. Only once a week though, but hard core binge drinking. The lexapro still works, just don't take it the night you go out. You should be fine.

oh, and about the weed, I have no idea about that because weed actually gives me panic attacks, totally defeats the purpose of taking Lexapro. I read somewhere here on babbleland about someone having adverse reactions when smoking on Lexapro. Do a search here on babble, type "weed and lexapro" or "marijuana and lexapro".... you can read others experiences with that.
