But..
Its been 6 days, 16 hours, 45 minutes 24 seconds since Nikki quit smoking. That is 133 cigarettes not smoked and £33.25 saved
Its suprisingly hard. But I've not even cracked and had one.. i did spend 15 minutes standing just near the ciggie counter at Safeways earlier, *needing* to buy just 10, but in the end, I was able to walk away..
Someone tell me a time will come when I will be able to think of something other than cigarettes!

It's very important! It's supposed to be easier to quit heroin than cigarettes. I did it ten years ago, and now never think about it. For me, it helped to go down gradually, and then stop inhaling when I got down to 3-4 a day. After I stopped, when i would feel overpowered with the urge to smoke, I would take the deepest breath I could, hold it, then exhale slowly- that helped a lot. It was so hard for about three weeks, but then got gradually easier day by day. Now, it's a non-issue. There weren't patches then, but perhaps they would make it easier?

My husband is using the patches.. I'm using the nicotine gum.
I think the fact we're doing it together has made it tougher.. but we tried it individually, but could too easily break down with each others ciggies *L*
I am worried that I have a whole new addiction to nicotine gum though *L*

My father and i did it together, but we weren't living with one another, which might have made it awfully hard. We compared notes over the phone- it actually took us more than a year, as we were decreasing very gradually. The main thing is, though, that it's going to get easier and easier- and then you won't even care when someone smokes in your presence (not that they do that much any more). I guess one could get addicted to the gum. too! One more thing to give up later...

Remember I'm in the UK, where smoking isn't considered to be quite so anti social as it is in the US.. Most of our friends smoke still, and even the restaurants and pubs we go to are still smoking (its not been banned here yet anywhere other than the workplace)..
We've not been out socially yet, but there have been people standing next to me at bus stops and the like smoking.. strangely, its not bothered me all that much!!
The pain in my arm (I have a chronic neuropathic pain problem in my right arm) has been an awful lot worse though which is strange.. I never thought of cigarettes having any pain killing properties..

I'm a very avid anti smoker but I stay quiet because I'd lose an awful lot of friends if I started snatching their ciggies out of their mouths...
It's the best thing you can do for you, however you do it.

I'll do it myself someday, but one addiction at a time. Meanwhile I chew the gum during work hours.
According to my allergist it doesn't matter if you do end up hooked on the gum. It's not the nicotine that hurts you, it's the other garbage in the smoke.
So, go chew in peace.

But.. There is a reason, (on top of the health ones) for my giving up.. and for that I need to be nicotine free too!! *G*
Plus, I get heart burn from HELL chewing this gum *L* I can barely afford the gaviscon habit I'm developing *L*
Today is OK.. I've not been at work (tube strike.. grrrr), but kept myself busy cleaning and tidying..
Sense of smell is *definately* returning.. its all a little intense at the moment!!

Right. I gave up smoking for that, too. But for one of them I chewed the first couple of months and the other one I didn't.
Low brth rate? Hah! The one that got 'partial chew' weighed in at 9.5 lbs.
