How do you deal with cravings?

They happen at the most inconvenient times. Like when you're not feeling your best.
I feel a bit like a hamster on a wheel, just keep running, it doesn't matter that you aren't getting anywhere, just don't stop, because then I might slip. It doesn't help that my anxiety keeps me picking up the phone and actually ASKING for help. Goodness me, if I asked for help, I my head might explode a la Mars Attacks!! Ack! Ack! Ack! or something equally embarassing. Or I'll stutter, or I'll cry. Or all of those things.

Just wondering how others cope with their cravings.

aww pc ask for help...it may be the best thing. you deserve it! stutter, cry, explode...hmm...i must be an embarrasment to myself lol and not even no it ;-)

People really do understand (ok not everyone but most) when you are not feeling well. It goes with being stressed...we dont think straight. We just have to tell people sothey know where we are at. Im sorry I cant help with the cravings bit, I wish I could.

Yeah, I really wish we had too. For sure next year!

Naw, I just curled up with a book and my white noise machine to take my mind off of the craving. I can easily get lost in a good book; it's a very safe place for me :-)
And the white noise machine is like a lullaby - I set it for "Ebb Tide" or something equally water-y and wave-y, and eventually I nodded off.

oh Im glad :-) its sucks to be alone with feelings but a book can be so theraputic.

I want a white noise machine.

Wow - I don't know how I missed seeing this post.

cravings .....

white noise and reading are good.

meditation works sometimes.

sometimes (ok, a lot of time) I get lost in computer games.

deep breaths.

play it through in your head, from the first drink (ahhhh) to the last one hours later, to the guilt and the hangover and the horrors of knowing you have to start all over again.

and sometimes you just have to ride it out. 'one day at at time' turns into 'one minute at a time'

but know they get fewer and further between and shorter in duration and lower in intensity.

and you can always call me.

I shouldn't be surprised when these hit me out of the blue. I wuz looking for some more ideas for diversion that others use.
The women's support group I've been going to is pretty fantastic. Always a revelation to be shared, lots of hugs to go around, my kind of people. This week's meeting was the first when I didn't have to premedicate with xanax to keep the anxiety at bay. I was cool as an (unpickled) cucumber.
