In reading Spanish I pick those things I am likely to want to finish. I have found "The Gospel according to Jesus Christ" a little difficult, but I had read a couple of his books in English, loved his irony, and the Portuguese is similar to the Spanish so I was not worried about losing anything in the translation.
So much depends in Spanish on the verb ending that English readers can be confused when several people are involved. For Spanish speakers English speakers read very quickly because there is all this non-information in our vowels that we skip. Learning to read Spanish means forgetting many of the rules for reading English.
Anything you are interested in.

I read novels a lot. I usually have two going at a time. What kind of books do you like? I can certainly come up with some fiction ideas. Non-fiction, I don't read so much.

Thats the thing. I havent explored what i like yet. Right now i read a book about barbell training in German. I figure i need to master both German and English if i want to be a translator. Usually people translate into their native language and not the other way around which makes sense.

"Seabiscuit" by Laura Hillenbrand is one of my favorites. It's the true story of a champion racehorse, its owner, its trainer, and its jockeys. Even if you have no interest in horses or in sports, it's still well worth reading.
"Act One" is the autobiography of the playwright Moss Hart. It's about his years-long struggle to become a successful writer. Very funny.
For fiction, I'd recommend "The Stories of John Cheever."
Ireland has produced some of the English language's most lyrical writers. One of my favorite short stories is "Guests of the Nation" by Frank O'Connor. It takes place during the Irish War of Independence (1919-21). It's about how IRA guards bond with their two English prisoners. You can read the whole thing here:

Another one of my favorite short stories is "The Pump" by William Humphrey. It's about a poor Oklahoma farmer in the 1930s who suddenly becomes rich when oil is discovered on his land. You can read the whole thing here:

Thanks for the suggestions. I have chosen Sapiens from the NYT best sellers list. The book should arrive today.
