As of today the CDC is designating only certain hospitals such as Emory & Maryland as they are trained to deal with this. It's a lot more serious than the flu. Phillipa

Try this one. If someone has no symptoms even though they have the virus, you can't be infected. In other words, you must really want to catch it to catch it. Your odds are .000000000001%
You can only catch bola thru:
*Blood or body fluids (including but not limited to urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk, and semen) of a person who is sick with Ebola
*objects (like needles and syringes) that have been contaminated with the virus
*infected animals
Ebola can NOT BE SPREAD THRU:
*Ebola is not spread through the AIR or by WATER or by the US food supply.

RN anethesiologist does not believe this either. Since the hospital she works at will not get the better protective equipment she may not work and most of other RN's say the same. Now they have desiginated only Emory, and the Maryland, and I think one out West to care for any patients. They are now not allowing flights into the country with any known to have come in contact. And still trying to contact the 138 people on the flight for now home quarantee for 21 days of those that flew with second RN. So it's different. Phillipa

> this is insanity. Here in Boston, there are reports of people going to emergency rooms with fevers and muscle aches worrying they have ebola. And hospitals taking precautions as if they did. Hello? This is flu season! Craziness.
It's all so ridiculous isn't it? I saw a similar story recently on my local news website. If you go to the ER with a fever, you get to be on the news! Yay!

I start to feel vaguely conspiracy-theory about things like this, sometimes.

I think it's the 24/7 news media needing something to go on about. Remember the plane that disappeared from Malaysia? That was on every news outlet all the time, all day, every day for weeks. I mean, it's a shame and all. But really?

The press made people hysterical with fear. We had one person out of 300,000,000 people sick. One. People 2000 miles from Texas were glued to CNN. OMG!
Now, Republicans -- Latin for brainless morons, are trying to make this Obama's Katrina. Too slow to react. React to what? Where's the boogieman? Even old man right wingers are saying this is the most ignorant group we've ever had. Pitiful.
This hysteria will make doctors rich.

:-(
Please don't. People I disagree with - some Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, contrarians, I-don't-give-a-crapians - all still have brains.
We come up with different alternatives when we use them. It's alright. It can be a starting point, not the end of all dialog.

>>No flights allowed from those countries infected to here finally.
This is not true and has not happened.
Conflicting ideas whether it will hurt or help. Probably extraordinarily hard to enforce and then we will lose track of people since they can, for example, if they still are intent on coming to the U.S., just get entry stamps from nearby countries by driving there and flying out of a different airport.
It's a hard decision but my main point is there is NO travel ban imposed by the U.S.

I've been doing so much better but maybe one day a week I fly off the tracks. When I'm over the top, I'm off the tracks.
There really needs to be an edit/delete button here. I wrote the exact same thing on facebook and deleted it 5 minutes later.
Not fun.

I was giving you double approval for being a voice of reason and sense on the ebola topic.

I don't understand how these nurses are catching it. I mean... It is about as transmittable as HIV, yes?
I wonder how much pharma is paying them for samples of their blood now that they have developed immunity?
I have been learning about how the government (in NZ at any rate) can rush through laws more quickly than usual in times of crisis. So, for example, in times of national disaster the government can rush through bills without the public being able to have a say and there being a process of dialogue.
The same goes for times of war. The Australian government wanted to rush through laws giving their defense service powers to access and alter a person's computer records (emails etc) if they suspected they were involved in terrorist activities... Why alter?
I sort of think this might be a way of pharma lobbying for less stringent laws on human testing. Either faster turnaround times on new drugs or... Whatever. I'm not sure if human testing protocols are relaxed in times of perceived crisis? I have suspicions something like that is going on...
Also the idea of growing vaccines in tobacco plants... Tobacco plants good for something, huh. I'm sure that didn't have anything at all to do with lobby groups etc etc etc...
I really do think that us masses are manipulated really rather a lot...

A few dozen people including the gf of the first man who died are not showing symptoms and are about to be cleared.
A few people with Ebola and maybe the 1st nurse to contract it may all live.

kind of like how the people who caught the bird flu in australia etc mostly managed to live, as well?

one thing my law lectures said that really stuck with me...
was how (from a law making point of view) we only really focus on civil liberties / individual rights during times of relative peace. when there is a war or a natural disaster or stuff like that then most of the laws that are passed quickly take those things away.
That it is important to look at history to notice things like this...
That it is worth looking very carefully at the laws that governments rush through in response to perceived crisis.
It then isn't much of a leap to see how manipulating public hysteria (get the people screaming out for government to DO SOMETHING) gives politicians lisence to hurredly pass dodgey laws...
i do really wonder about the pharma thing, quite a lot.
with the laws that are made that give increased powers to defence etc... Those laws (once passed) are there to stay. They aren't only in operation while the perception of threat is high or whatever...
i wonder if laws are being made that are helpful to pharma... that don't just apply to the development of vaccine for perceived potential epidemics... I wonder if more broader laws are being passed to do with the process of human approval...
whether it is about taking samples of peoples blood from developing nations (without appropriate permissions or renumeration or perhaps under something like extortion conditions where treatment is refused unless)... to go on to develop vaccines from that... to human trials (run of shore where things are much cheaper and laws are more relaxed)... to features of the approval process more generally... to... whatever.
I wonder if my lecturer will know anything about this...
NZ got a seat on the security council. Huh. Guess that means we need to tow the party line for a couple of years...

But one might consider a flu shot
The flu is amazing, knocked me out of commission for days a few years ago.
I have a cold. How sick is too sick to go to work?
I have escaped my work responsibilities for the day, but not without some guilt. Oh the guilt. I could've gone, shared what is likely a rhinovirus, but stress does wear on the immune system. Worky worky today, sicky sicky tomorrow.
Can someone offer me absolution?

colds are sick enough to not go to work if you don't feel like it / if you have some sick days up your sleeve. if we found a cure for the common cold... something else would rise up to take it's place.
i think a cold is your body's way of saying 'chill the f*ck out'. i have managed not to get sick... as in... not even a cold... for the last couple years. since quitting smoking. quitting smoking helped... but mostly... when i feel sick coming on... i make chicken soup and hunker down and sleep for 13 hours and then it goes away. i am lucky that i can do that, though. i expect i would have got sick if i couldn't have.

i think it is easier to feel compassion for others than for ourselves sometimes. because we've been trained not to be selfish.
except me. i can be very selfish :)
