My parents are/were upwardly mobile. Part advanced education, part hard work after the degrees, part economic shifts...they're now solidly upper middle class. And they're behind me, thank God, so I have a good, comfortable place to live, good food to eat, decent clothes to wear, and, now, an attorney.
People around here hate me. I lived in poverty, partly supported by my parents, for a couple years. Apparently, I'm forever "poor wh*t* tr*sh." This is the southeast, Bible Belt Country. "Good" poor people know their place. "Uppity" poor people don't.
I have incredibly healthy skin. I started using imported retin-a (yes, that's legal, I think) w/o an Rx at 25/26, to get things under control. I have healthy, thick hair, thanks in part to Orthomolecular. Wait...I do OM; that's for "good" people. I'm "bad." I'm a "trailer trash f*gg*t."
Here's where it gets interesting...
1) you're a f*gg*t if you're poor; 2) you're a flamer if you're working class; 3) you're (gay) Joe Average, nothing special if you're middle class; 4) you're homosexual if you're above middle class. Something like that.
Also interesting: the way social class affects EVERYTHING. Poor people apparently don't need lawyers. People around here refuse to believe that my dad got me an attorney. I apparently have some sort of amazing Public Defender.
I smoke. Therefore, I'm trailer trash. I smoke Camels. I'm trying to be cool.
I listen to good music. Ladytron, Joy Division, Nina Simone, etc. I'm a poseur and a wanna be.
I was "despicable" when I was poor. My people are behind me. I'm "absolutely nothing special" and "disgustingly average."
I have pretty hair. Since its grown back and gotten healthy, its coppery brownish auburn with streaks...I dunno...a genetic fluke, lol. I spend my "welfare money" on expensive dye jobs. Poor people don't need pretty hair.
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm 30. Just turned. I've had a psychotic disorder since forever, but it didn't matter because, back then, my people didn't matter (it takes time to work up the academic totem pole).
Blah blah blah...not to whine too much, because God is working in my life and has already blessed me and my parents (things could be FAR worse), but...wow.
Is this worse in the South, you think?

Being originally from the NE I know that it's different. The further South you go below Virginia the worse it gets. I think Florida is okay as mostly Northern Folks who moved down there. Phillipa

May be the south. But also, how big is your town/city? I've spent my life in fairly big cities. People don't have the time, energy or knowledge about others to bother with these kind of things. That's the great thing about cities. You can start anew.
