Hypnopompic hallucinations and delusions

Posted by NKP on November 7, 2012, at 12:48:06

I have a problem with hypnopompic hallucinations and delusions. I sleep restlessly at night and wake up during the night convinced I am being watched or that there are people breaking in to my apartment.

After a while I realise it's not really happening and then I go back to sleep.

This disrupts my sleep badly.

Does anybody know what I can do to stop this?

Have you seen a sleep specialist? They'd be in the best position to help.

Have you tried leaving on a dimmed light (like a night light)?

I see things which are not there and I also have night terrors. Leaving a light on very low helps for some reason. I still have night terrors but I can calm down much quicker afterwards. With the hallucinations, I think having the light on helps the brain process things much quicker. I don't know. But it helps.

If night terrors I think prazosin is being used to eliminate them also. Phillipa

dopamine activity is higher in cases like this....its the fear reaction mixed with beliefs that are felt like a threat. With medication, its hard to deal with it, you can tune out thoughts and be passive with them. If you ever notice there are people that have this same concern and they put bars in the windows and bolts on the doors, personally if that was done...it would reduce your fear, there's no way anyone could get in. It's just costs money and the apartments have restrictions:(

you could set up death traps for intruders LOL senturey motion machine guns....

but seriously a commonly used medicine called Risperdal, would help. But im not the doctor and have no idea what their thinking. Still a antipsychotic would help really because there's ones that are sedating for sleep and lower dopamine activity to paranoia comes.

do you have nightmares and wake up from them?
