Im just starting this book,a memoir from the 70s.The author goes through a horrendous addiction to valium.I guess thats when it was prescribed in such high amounts.I think it was also made into a movie.Anyway, she gets her life back,so not depressing,I hope.Im obsessed now with memoirs about mental illness and the recovery from it.

My goodness, what does an horrendous addiction to Valium look like? How much did she need to take every day?
I always thought that book was about something different. I guess she has a nervous breakdown?

shes taking handfuls of valium, and its not helping, yet her pdoc is telling her to take more, not less.So far, this book is not really holding my attention though.I may start "Wild",its about a woman who hikes the pacific trail after being shocked by the sudden death of her mom.

Oh, I haven't heard about that one. Thanks for the review and synopsis of the other.
Handfuls? Wow. I was prescribed Valium once short-term. I loved it. I would give up Xanax for it. That is probably a bad sign :-). I don't feel the Xanax. It just chugs away in the background.

I read it years ago. Was on valium but it didn't leave an impression so it must have been out of the norm. This morning I found my 2.5mg of valium usually take in night still stitting untaken and also my synthroid. No memory of if took the synthroid so will not take either? Phillipa. Maybe I have Alzheimers as happens a lot. My kids always said I'd get it and they would walk me off a pier and be rid of me.

I'm in favour of it but not by this method.

Naturally it is illegal :)
One thinks about death more often.
Some people (not me) think this is morbid....you know, the cheerful consortium.
I spend a lot of time not doing anything. I can lie on a couch and stare for hours. I don't mind it. I am enjoying the colours while they last.

Well I read it some more. She was taking 30mg of valium, and then stopped cold turkey.I think that would cause mental breakdown.I just dont like her writing style much, however, the subject matter is fascinating to me.
This is the end of the thread.
