Health Insurance Nightmare

Posted by Mission7 on August 22, 2011, at 14:08:32

I haven't visited this board in years, but can always turn to it for advice.

I'm shopping for private health care insurance and am super confused. Here's my situation. I've been on Effexor for 10+ years and have never felt better in my life. I've had a private Catastrophic Health insurance for about 10 years with a reasonable premium. I think it was around $125/mo. when I signed up and topped out at $179/mo. until I was diagnosed with cancer.

Luckily, the cancer was removed and was pronounced "98% cured". It was slow growing type, of which my Dr said, "If you're hell-bent on getting cancer, this is the kind you want." The entire bill was around $50K, of which I shelled out $5K. Not bad.... Until! My health care premium started going up... and up... and up. Month by month, I get a form letter explaining that in order to meet costs... I just got another letter, and get this... it's an eye popping $687.51/mo.

So, realizing rates will go up until I'm priced out, I began searching for an alternative. I filled out an "instant" online quote form and have gotten tons of calls. At first I entertained them, but I quickly realized that they speak in another language... Can anyone help me find a good source for private health care insurance?

Yikes! Pray that obamacare goes into effect in 2014 (a long way off, I know). In Massachusetts, premiums on private self-pay heath care are not low, but they don't go up if you have had high health costs or have a pre-existing condition. This is a great relief, because I have been hospitalized many times for depression and my husband was treated for kidney cancer. Just knowing we could get insurance at a fixed (though high) rate, is a relief.

Don't know what state you are in but I'd check with your state insurance board as isn't this now illegal? Phillipa
