Busted talking to myself...again

Posted by Christ_empowered on August 19, 2011, at 10:43:02

Just got busted by my dad talking to myself. Ugh. My mind just runs so fast sometimes, I gotta get it out. Weirdly enough, when I was burned out years ago, I rarely talked to myself--not enough going on upstairs for all that. Now, its become more of an issue because my mind is back in high gear and I don't really have anyone to talk to.

What should I do? My dad was like "if you're feeling crazy, tell me..."

I hate worrying people.

Know the feeling talk to myself all the time. Easy to say hard to do socialize more? Is that what he would like? I don't think it's abnormal to talk to self eiter did it when normal also. Phillipa

CE,

What did you say to him?

Would you tell him if you were in real trouble?

If so, does he need to be reminded that you'll tell him or your mom?

Some of us are just eccentric in our ways....

And parents seem hardwired to worry :-/. Not much can be done to eradicate that.

I think he just doesn't want me going batsh!t ever again. Its not going to happen, of course, but for the average person, you walk in on your mentally ill offspring talking to himself...bells go off. Its understandable. I just hate how embarrassing it is for me, that's all.

CE - What kinds of things do you say? Just yesterday, I was rehearsing a conversation I need to have with someone. I don't know them well, so I have some anxiety about how it will be received. Rehearsing it out-loud gives me the opportunity to hear what it sounds like - and I can easlily spot things that might not come across the way I want it to, and then figure out another way to get my message across. If I only do it in my head, I end up drifting and don't hear how it sounds. I've found that when I say it out-loud, I can tell when I'm getting carried away or too intense. Then I can practice being calmer while I get through a difficult 'conversation.'

I don't think it's unusual for people to do this kind of 'talking to yourself.'

What might be a little unusual would be if you are having a back and forth conversation with yourself - and during the conversation you are experiencing yourself as two different people - or are unaware that the other side of the conversation is actually yourself.

In any event - from everything I've read, it sounds like you are a very loved son.. and maybe he heard you and just wanted to check to see if you had company! I know my kids at various times have caught me rehearsing like I described above, and have made fun of me like you wouldn't believe! It's been embarassing for me too, maybe because it feels vulnerable to think you're alone, and then to find out someone's listening :-)

Maybe you could solve your self-consciousness about it by talking to them and reassuring your parents that you are fully aware of what you're doing and that if they hear you talking to yourself - you're just keeping yourself company. You might also want to get reassurance for your own self from your doctor or therapist that what you're doing is Not a sign that you are 'crazy.'

I found myself walking along saying 'Ah lactoferrin, lactoferrin, where can I get lactoferrin?'

Truly, given the way this world works, don't worry.

One could come here or go to new York and fit right in.

My grandmother spoke to herself. I didn't mind, and no adult seem to either.
