opportunity to be on Discovery Channel

Posted by Dr. Bob on February 25, 2010, at 14:28:41

Hi, everyone,

Just wanted to pass on the below...

Bob

--

My name is Michele and I work on the Discovery Health Channel series, I'm Pregnant and...
The programs air on Tuesday nights at 9:30pm. The series has been very successful so we have been asked to gear up for a second season.

We are looking to have one episode about a woman who is pregnant and fits one of the following topics.

Pregnant and...
1. have OCD
2. a hoarder
3. have severe hypochondria
4. suffer from agoraphobia

I got your contact information from the World Psychiatric Association and was hoping you might either know of someone who fits the description and is pregnant or could pass the word on to other colleagues.

We are currently looking to profile a woman who is giving birth between the months of March and May.

Each episode is a half hour long and is sort of split into three parts, pre-birth and back story, the birth, and the follow up after the birth. We will financially compensate the person chosen for the program.

I'm trying to get the word out to as many people as possible. Feel free to send my email out to others. If you know anyone who is interested, they can contact me by sending an email to mspinak@sirensmedia.com. Thanks so much.

What do you see as the value of this to the person volunteering or to society that you're posting this yourself?

Is the opportunity actually "to be on the Discovery Channel" or is the opportunity something else?

If the opportunity is "to be on the Discovery Channel", what is the value of this opportunity?

Good question I wouldn't want to be. Phillipa

I suppose it'd be up to the person, if they wanted to share their story.

My thoughts are somewhat cynical. If I were going to be a mother, I'd be hesitant to share my psychological issues since it might compromise other peoples' ideas about my competence as a mother. That might be an ignorant view point on the part of others, but I'd be protective nonetheless. Again, could be paranoia, but that's what came to mind.

I probably wouldn't have thought twice about it if someone from Discovery Channel fished here for stories. It's their job to provide content for their shows.

But for Dr. Bob to do it implies endorsement of the idea. Even encouragement. Since I like to think he has some concern for our best interests, I was wondering what he thought the benefit was to whoever it was he was asking to volunteer. Since I'm sure the benefit can't be "to be on the Discovery Channel". Unless that is a benefit in and of itself?

I must confess it feels to me sort of like asking monkeys to volunteer to display themselves at the zoo. So I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

The woman will get financial compensation, plus with being famous there might be more access to help.

If I weren't super shy, I'd think being on TV would be great.

I didn't ask anyone to volunteer. As obsidian said, it's up to the person. If they'd feel like a monkey on display, they can decline. If they think sharing their story might help others who are "pregnant and", they can inquire.

Ah, I interpreted your post as encouragement.

And you answered my question. You posted it because you think reality shows featuring those with mental illness help others with mental illness?

Certainly I've had a goodly number of people refer to a reality show about hoarding when they speak to me about my mother. I'm trying to figure out whether I think that's a good thing.

While obviously in a different form and somewhat less revealing, what the Discovery Channel is asking for is very similar to Babble. That is, it is learning about someone with mental illness. Thus it is not hard to see why Dr. Bob would post the opportunity. At least Discovery is likely to pay. Dr. Bob gets all this data for free

I must be naive. I hadn't realized they paid.

I'm not sure any of the reality shows seem all that real to me, but payment would seem to make that even more true.

I remember the very old days of Phil Donahue, when guests shared their experiences and the intent truly did seem to be to help others understand. Then later, after all the new entrants into the genre, it seemed more and more like exploitation - and not necessarily all on one side. The sharing grew more dramatic and louder, but not necessarily as realistic and touching as it had been.

This is the end of the thread.
